So you’ve plucked up the courage to leave your job behind, or simply managed to secure a little time off to get away. Of course, you’ll want to carry as little luggage as possible — maybe a couple of lightweight suitcases — and avoid paying excess luggage charges. But packing just the essentials and minimizing bags, etc. isn’t the only way that you can cut expenses when you’re traveling. Read on for a few more and transform a cash-hungry trip into a much cheaper one.

Choose a less expensive destination

Before you head out, research into the prices of your destination. Even trivial things such as a cup of coffee can cost a significant amount more in large cities, so opt for destinations that are a little cheaper. Consider staying in a nearby town and travelling into a city for the day. This cuts your accommodation expenses.

Book on a local website

Exchange rates can change pretty fast, so if possible, you should look at booking on a local version of a website if possible. Booking in the local currency can save you money on flights, accommodation and other necessities. As well as potentially working out cheaper, they may also have different (and better) deals.

Use a family-run business

Family run businesses care a lot about their customers and try to offer better service. The fact that they are employing members of their own family allows them to (legally) navigate certain labor laws and creates margin for them to make deals without discounts, etc. munching too much into their own profits. There’s also that warm, friendly vibe that comes with the service.

Capitalize on free tours

Some cities have “greeters”. These are smart, friendly locals who love the city that they live in and will happily show visitors around. Why pay for a guided tour when you have someone who will take you round for nothing? Bear in mind that these are most likely to be walking tours, however, not a form of free transport around the city.

Save by driving

If you’re really itching to explore, you’ll probably want to get behind the wheel and out on the open road. Make good on it, by all means, but don’t be the only one. Team up with three other intrepid explorers and share the expenses (as well as the driving). If you’re in a country where it’s cheap to fill the gas tank, this can be exceptionally cost effective.

Travel is an expensive endeavor, but you don’t necessarily have to prioritize experiences, maybe forcing you to miss out on some to see others. The tips above can make the savings happen and, by extension, leave you with the cash to make those treasured travel experiences a reality.
